Yes. Under the age of 6, children require a paediatrician, speech-language pathologist and psychologist. Typically, a paediatrician and speech language pathologist must conduct their respective assessments and subsequent reports. Copies of these reports are provided to the psychologist, who conducts the final stage of the evaluation and diagnoses autism.

In general, sessions are play based and child led. Each session is tailored to your child’s needs.

Assessment: this will vary based on the child. It may be play based and the SLP may choose to use standardized methods and observational measures. After assessment, the SLP will touch base with parents and/or provide a report to the family. Assessment includes:
parent interview
parent questionnaires and intake forms
direct observation with the child/play
language samples
informal assessments (i.e. narrative assessment)
formal, standardized assessments
interview and consultation with other individuals, including: Behaviour Consultants, teachers, physicians, etc.
Therapy: is typically play based as this often helps children generalize their skills at home and in school. Therapy looks different for every child!
Group therapy: this is a fantastic way to help children practice their social-communication skills in a group setting.

We appreciate, enjoy and strive for team-based consultation. This means that we are happy to collaborate with educational professionals (virtually, or in person). We may potentially see your child to gain more information about how they communicate and school and collaborate with educational professionals about strategies to support their communication. However, ongoing therapy sessions conducted in schools are limited at this time.
